The Vintage Yacht Regatta is THE classic Brisbane festival. The event is held over Queens Birthday weekend in June. Every year around forty yachts participate in the Vintage Yacht Regatta making this the largest event of its kind in Queensland. The fleet includes yachts visiting from other states and overseas as well as the local boats.
The Vintage Yacht Regatta has the recognized status as a ‘not to be missed’ event. The race has a relaxed atmosphere where experts and beginners are equally welcome. Simply showing off your yacht and the social side is as important as the racing itself.
The 2014 event will be the 39th edition of the event. Two races are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday with a mixture round the cans and passage racing planned. The regatta concludes on Monday morning with an optional pursuit race finishing near the Coffee Pots in order that crews can then head for their home port.
Unique to the Vintage Yacht Regatta is the use of different course lengths within the same race area. This keeps the fleet together and helps add to the atmosphere. Whilst all the courses do have upwind legs, the focus is one of close reaching and downwind runs rather than long beats to windward.
In addition to the racing, the Regatta also features a hotly contested Concours d’Elégance competition. Judging takes place over the course of the weekend and awards are given out in a number of categories.
The Club is open throughout the weekend for spectators to wander around the classic yachts and racing is held as close to Shorncliffe pier as possible to enable viewing from the shore.
